The history of the Redneck Tour
The history of the Redneck Tour is a long and sordid tale, full of intreeg, trial and err, and occasionally, a bit a truth.
Unfortunately, the Committee has yet to agree on this story, never mind put it on paper.
We do, however, have on paper the
Big Coons
The Committee awards special recognition to individuals who through their community efforts have brought favorable recognition to the Redneck Tour, or who their actions have been instrumental in the creation of the Redneck Tour.

Hiztry of the Grunt and Groan
Way back in 1967 on the Labor Day holiday a very young and small group of golfers had to wake up very early and sneak out of the house before the wife and kids heard to play golf.
Participants were Tom Houston, Billy Cannon, Roger Kube, Chuck Ryan, Charlie Stringfellow, Dan Peacock, Butch Cook, Tad Loving. Could have been more but, as best as can remembered, we had two foursomes…we met at the Holiday Inn and had breakfast and put 10 dollars in a hat drew partners and the winner took all….
Afterwards, we would meet at someone’s house and have a cook out with the families & kids. Each year the group grew, adding Chuck & Danny Rose, Duke duFrane ,Robert Hudson, Dick Clore and his dad, etc. This continued and we continue to grow….
One day in 1976 Duke bought a couple of nice dog bowls and the rest is history...

History of the Hillbilly Open
In 1989 two Hilton Head developers, David Staley and Tom Jacoby, had a vision to build a public golf course just off Hilton Head Island. At that time the location was considered a risk because it was “across the bridge.” In their search for investors they contacted Bobby Sandell, a local real estate agent with REMAX. Bobby took the proposal to several of his clients, including Bill Cannon and Duke duFrane, who decided to invest in the venture.
The course opened in November 1991. Among the guests for the opening were Erskine Bankhead and T.I. Martin. Mr. Martin suggested that an annual tournament in Hilton Head would be a great idea and “The Hillbilly Open” was born. It was agreed that the tournament would be held the week after Thanksgiving each year and would include golfers from multiple clubs across the country.
The first Hillbilly Open was held in 1991 with 16 players. “Wussy” Gilmore won the tournament. It has been held each year since at the Old South Golf Links in Bluffton, South Carolina. Each year two other courses throughout the Island are paired with Old South to encompass the 54-hole tournament.
Today the tournament draws a field of approximately 80 players whose ages range from 30 to 90.
